Capo Comino: a guide to the dunes and beaches
There are places in Sardinia that look as though they belong in a nature documentary: Capo Comino is one of them. Its brilliant white dunes, shaped by the wind and embraced by a Mediterranean pine forest, form a landscape of rare beauty. And then there is the sea: turquoise, transparent, with a seabed that slopes so gently you can see every detail several metres down.
Capo Comino is a few kilometres from La Caletta, on the Siniscola coast in the eastern Nuoro province. It is not a well-known destination like Cala Luna or the Costa Smeralda, and that is precisely its greatest quality.
The dunes of Capo Comino: what they are and why they are special
The dunes of Capo Comino are part of an aeolian coastal dune system: they formed over thousands of years through the accumulation of sand carried by the wind from the sea inland. The result is an almost lunar landscape in constant transformation, where fine white sand meets the green of the Mediterranean scrub and the pine forest.
Part of the area is protected by landscape preservation rules, which has helped keep it intact and largely unbuilt. For this reason, even in August, you can find stretches of coastline with no beach clubs or buildings — a rarity in modern Sardinia.

Le Saline di Capo Comino beach
A beautiful dune system, white sand and clear, shallow water: ideal for families with young children. The beach is wide and accessible by car, with a car park that is always available and never overcrowded. A wild and authentic spot, with a small snack bar and sports equipment rental.
The dunes beach (Capo Est)
Accessible by car and with its own car park, this is a wide beach with fine sand and shallow water that makes it perfect for families with children. In high season it gets busy, but never chaotic. Along the edge of the pine forest there are natural shady spots where you can lay out your towel.
Berchida
Berchida is the wild beach par excellence on this stretch of coast: very fine white sand and water of an extraordinary colour. Despite its unspoilt feel, it is well equipped with a bar, restaurant, sun loungers and umbrellas. It can be reached by car along a comfortable dirt road off the SS 125 Orientale Sarda; for the more energetic, it is also accessible on foot through the Capo Comino pine forest in about 40–50 minutes. The car park is very large — there is room for everyone.
Berchida is the kind of beach you remember. Those who visit once usually come back every year.
Faro di Capo Comino
A natural area of great beauty, ideal for snorkelling among rocks of unusual shapes. The area also features an ancient Roman harbour and traces of a Roman road, which make the visit even more fascinating.

A large pine forest with several access points to the sea: a beautiful natural area, cool and perfect for walks and easy trekking. Hidden among the vegetation are sheltered coves, ideal for those looking for a corner of sea away from the crowds.
The Capo Comino pine forest
The pine forest is an integral part of the Capo Comino experience. A woodland of maritime pines stretching for several kilometres along the coast, offering shade and cool air even during the hottest hours of the day. Walking or cycling through it is one of the simple pleasures of this area: the paths that lead to the wild beaches pass through a silent landscape scented with resin and sea salt.
In the early morning, when sunlight filters through the pines and the sea is still flat, there is a stillness that is hard to find elsewhere — and it is, in fact, one of the favourite spots for runners.
How to get to Capo Comino
Capo Comino is about 10–15 minutes by car from La Caletta. There is no regular public transport, so a car is essential. Parking near the main beaches is always paid from June to October; it does not fill up too quickly, but in the peak weeks of July and August arriving before 9:00 is the best strategy.
